When other challengers rush from the castle, Lam doesn’t hustle along with them. After all, he’s reluctant to be there in the first place. And that feeling only increased the more he listened to the snubbull go on. So he’d much rather bide his time and get through this at an efficient pace, and
not get ganked by hoards of shadow pokemon that swarm the charging players that break away on their own. No thanks. He does not want to have to keep waiting and coming back.[break][break]
And besides, it’s not like psyducks are particularly
fast pokemon. Surely Phil can’t have gotten that far, shadow pokemon, or not…[break][break]
So the first thing Lam does when he hits the treeline is go
up a tree. Which is
not easy in this dumb, miniature avatar body. Jump height? He doesn’t have it.[break][break]
Perched there on a branch, it gives him the time to sort through the player screen he saw before. He games a fair amount, so figures there’ll be a stat screen or
something to look at. With concentrated thought, the screen blinks to life, and exclamation point over a minimized pop-up signaling new info.
bingo. Feet kicking over the edge of the branch, he taps at it to see what they’ve given him.[break][break]

your looting and foraging skills gain an incredible boost and will not weigh you down. however, it is questionable how useful your gained items will be. creativity required. [break]

Oh.[break][break]
Well, it was promising at the
start– a foraging bonus sounds great. Not so much the back half, though. What’s that even mean?
Be creative? Can’t they just, you know, give him the useful item he needs and be done with it?[break][break]
He notices a knot in the tree trunk and decides to test the skill out– his hand dives into the hole, and his fingers close around something immediately. It’s gotta be something good. A scatterbang? A sticky glob? A–[break][break]
Acorn.[break][break]
He watches as the screen shifts to a bottomless inventory. The acorn cheerily pops into one of the boxes– he notes the dream ball in his pocket is listed there too. He tries his luck one more time, and gets…. A rubber band.
“Yeah, ‘cause I can fend off so much with this…” he grumbles as he stares down at the acorn and rubber band before waving the screen away.[break][break]
It’s only then that he notices the bright red glow of eyes from the foliage of a branch above, and a shadowed greedent chatters at him angrily.[break][break]
Lam yelps, and prepares for the chunky squirrel to drop right on his head. His hands fumble the items he holds and in a moment of improv, he nocks the acorn into the rubber band and pulls it back.
“OHHH..” The lightbulb goes off. Creative, got it.[break][break]
He lucks out on his aim, the acorn shoots at the greedent and pops it right on the head. With an angry screech, it falls in a heap on the ground.
Phew.[break][break]
Tentatively, he slides down the trunk and leans toward the unconscious pokemon. A question to loot it pops up and he chooses yes.[break][break]
He is given a moldy pecha berry.[break][break]
Maybe Phil won’t know the difference.[break][break]
——
[break][break]
It turns out— shadow Psyduck are
great at not being found if they don’t want to. It takes Lam ages, but he does find the rogue pet eventually. Deep in the forest, floating in a pond.[break][break]
And he is not happy to see Lam busting up his party for one.[break][break]
He tosses the pecha berry, and Phil
does get distracted by the yucky treat after all. He stops short in his head on charge, peering down his inky dark bill with a confused
PSSSSYYY ? ? and Lam seizes the opportunity before he’s rushed again.[break][break]
Phil disappears within the confines of the dream ball with a
click! but it seems he has more to sort through.[break][break]
Two options pop up for Lam and he hums in deliberation. It would be kinder to purify the little guy, right? But… his skill isn’t exactly useful in actual combat unless he macgyver’s everything to hell and back.[break][break]
“Sorry, buddy… but we gotta get outta here with some firepower.”[break][break]

KEEP YOUR POKEMON'S STRENGTH
[break][break] Warning! Doing so will keep you from reaching their true potential in lieu of brute force.
Continue?
[break][break]
He feels guilty as he opts to continue. But it never said it was a one time deal, yeah? Loopholes exist for a reason.[break][break]
Turning back toward the castle, Lam suddenly registers that his face feels
heavy. His chin drops down toward his chest abruptly, and he looks down the long, dark bill to see what’s up—[break][break]
Huh??? Wait a second—[break][break][break]
NOTES – birth by sleep[break]
– good luck, phil!!
